Oak keepsake box.

I do believe I have incorporated a “design first” in box-making with this piece. What might that be, you ask?

Well, I am not the first to make an octagonal box. Nor am I the first to design a support structure like the legs on this box. Nor am I the first to use the idea of a bridge for the interior( that credit goes to Andy, master box maker, from whom I stole the idea). I am not the first to use some serious math to create. So, what is it that makes this box SO special???

I would like to have those interested to guess what it is. So, before you read further, have a go at it! Hint: the decorative band around the middle of the carcass is not just for decoration, it does have a function.

Thats right, this curvaceous band is the handle, by which, the box can be rotated 360ยบ. It is a carousel box. If any of you have seen a box that is also a carousel, please let me know, and I will stop making this boast

The box turns on a 45mm dowel fixed through the bottom of the carcass, and the bottom of the box is 2cm thick with a spline running through the bottom and the dowel for glue strength. It is actually the independent leg structure that turns round the dowel. The pointed finial below is fixed by tension with two 4mm dowels slightly angled to create a tension-fit. This finial can be removed, and under it is a screw that holds the mechanism sandwiched together. I did this as a safeguard in case the wood swells and the rotation becomes hindered; and in this way, the parts can be disassembled and reworked if need be.

Diameter is 20cm, height 26cm. Legs are jointed with tongue and groove. The inside of the top has been carved bowl-like to accomodate the curve of the bridge tray. I will either shellac or spray lacquer as a finish when the L.O. is cured. Lined with velour(which I wont affix until the interior finish is done).

What is a carousel box? A music box?

I thought I explained it rather well, but anyway, a carousel “turns.” No music, unless you want to whistle while it turns:))

Great job Brian.
I especially love the legs, gives the whole box an organic feel. I also really like the double ring handle. All the details make it a great piece. Lots of great features here. Keep it up!!!

so much eye appeal to pick any one thing but I especially like what appears to be a rams horn handle

Thanks to everyone!!!

Hey Jeff, when I saw there was another Wildwood LJ, you, and then again a second Wildwood LJ, I seriously considered changing my company name. I decided not to in the end, that would be quite problematic, as I have a website, Instagram, Pinterest, and business cards, and clients, all tied to that name, and its too late now. We are on different continents though, so theres that. I/we will just have to accept that there is alot of wildwood.
