This is a project called “Shelf Mouse” by Duane Cartwright in Woodcarving magazine, issue 168. I cut up some butternut for a fellow carver and was given one of the pieces for my labors. I’m having it set looking down instead of hanging from a shelf as in the article. I call it “Mickey Rat” because it’s 8.5” long. No mouse that size ever. And I like Mickey Mouse.

Now you need to carve a piece of cheese to place on the shelf below him. (Not the box of rat poison that htl is going to suggest in comment #3.) ;)
I like it, well done Steven.

Thanks! A wedge of cheese is an excellent idea!

Heh, thanks! We’ve had a problem with rats lately, coming into our yard from the neighbor’s, eating the stuff in the truck garden my son made. Two got it by the electronic trap, but they got the eggplant and zucchini last night. I think that if there was a way to safely install flamethrower, he’s use it. Might be possums or raccoons. What rat ever wanted an unripe zucchini!?

LOL That’s a good one, John!

Thanks, Dave!

I was talking about the rats at my carving class (I’m a student) and one of the people said to sprinkle granulated garlic around. My son did that, so we’ll have to wait and see. The person who told me this sprinkled it around his tomato plants and they haven’t been attacked by any vermin since.

I’d bet if you had some pizza plants around the garlic would just encourage them to eat more pizza, but I’m not from Italy so have no real knowledge of this. ;-]

The early bird may get the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese 8^)

Lots of whimsey there Steven! Nice carving.

Thanks, Splintergroup! I can’t really take credit for the design, I just used the tutorial in the magazine.

htl, maybe I’ll just throw rotten pizza to them over the fence. They come from our neighbor’s yard, which makes Sanford and Son’s junkyard look organized.
