Project Information

This was a fun build. Figured Movingui and rustic walnut with black tinted epoxy filled knots and cracks. The mitered box was strengthened with a total of three splines, 2 walnut, and 1 cherry. The solid movingui top and bottom are mortised in and only glued along the long grain. For the finger groove, I used a 1/2" round bit on the router with a fence. The 10mm barrel hinges worked great, smooth opening. The back has a 45 chamfer so the lid stops at 90 degrees. The corners were rounded over and sanded to 320. Three coats of shellac and polished with paste wax. Thanks for looking.

Thanks, Ivan. I tried to account for the kerf when cutting the lid off but forgot to account for planing/sanding the saw marks flat.

Thanks Paul, Rockler had Movingui one week and this wide board with curl running the entire length just stood out. I really like resawing wide boards like this for matching box top and bottom.

Really great. You've used several very interesting techniques. I very well may borrow a few down the road.

Very nice looking project. It has a warm and inviting look to it. I like the lighter toned cherry splines because I think they visually complement the figured Muvingui. The hinges look great.

Oni, you have made a beautiful box and the craftsmanship is first rate. I like the contrast in the woods you used. Movingui also blends well with cherry.

Figured Movingui is one of my favorite woods. It is so rarey beautiful that I could never bring myself to use it for a bottom. I guess I am just too cheap. I would use a quality plywood and probably a liner for a bottom and make another box from the second piece of Movingui, but that is just me. This is a box I made with Movingui.

Using Movingui as a top and as splines also has a nice look. I like your finger lift. Did you use an ogee bit to form it? Keep boxing and keep posting.
