I have been having fun with these new designs. This one is maple with a cocobolo base. Personally I like all natural wood but the pieces that seem to get the most attention in the galleries i have them in are the ones with a taste of color.
This piece is 11” tall and was shaped with my old faithful Makita grinder with a rubber backed pad and sanding disc. That is what worked best for me since I started sculpting. The grinder will rough it out and a lot of sanding is still required up to 320 grit to get it smooth enough.
The finish is lacquer from a can.

I have always been inspired by your work. I have thought many times about trying to sculpt something I build but after all the work that goes into a project, I’m always afraid to mess them up. Great work as always.

I learned that I have, and still will mess up a few more projects that I care to think about. Just look at it as part of the learning process when you want to try new techniques. I’ve put more than my share of “oops” mess ups in my burn pile and learned from them.
I always try new ideas on cheaper disposable woods…

I like the flow and the simplicity – the colors work well also.
