Steps to a lofted bed

My youngest moved to her college dorm on Saturday. She wanted to “medium loft” the bed to have room for a dresser underneath. After the setup she asked for steps to help climb into the bed. I said, “sure I can do that”. Her Mom said, “I can bring it up to Athens on Monday”...

I had a couple of boards that met the specs for a 18” high step stool; two 9” steps; and designed around them.

  • 38 inch x 0.9×6 walnut board for 12” wide steps and braces.
  • 36 inch x 0.96×6 maple board re-sawn for the 3/8” vertical sides.

I worked for about 9 hours on it and finished it with shellac (for speed finish) on Sunday and another coat on Monday morning. The box joints are my first for unequal thickness boards and it worked out well; I think. Mom did the delivery and “installation”. She is happy now with steps to climb into the bed. We wish her great luck and know she’ll do well at college (UGA).
