Saw this somewhere and thought I would give it a try. 2×4’s cut with a staggered template, roughed out and then sanded with the angle grinder and hand sanded to 100 grit. The blue is a dye and the red is a stain that I had on hand. Dig out the stars with chisels and carving knife. Turned out pretty well. Trying something similar with 1×4’s so we’ll see how that turns out.

That top view answers a lot of my questions! A beautiful piece and I’m guessing that you get great shadows from the thickness of the wood! I might have to try one of those myself…
