Mantle over fire place was too small so the wife and I decided to make one big enough to accept our TV or what ever she wanted. In addition she wanted it to be back wall framed so that the main back wall could be big and changed out to decorate as she wanted with the seasons. So the back wall is just a big piece of oak ply wood stained and with a large cast iron fleur de lis style motif on it at this time. Sometimes she will want it just white and will decorate as she will, also have oak plywood with shelving so she can put objects up if she wants. The whole thing is very interchangeable. The Mantle is 87 inches long, 15 inches deep and 3 inches thick. It is all solid oak and stained dark Java to match our numerous book shelves. The whole thing took about 3 weeks to make because I was doing other projects in between.
