I eneterd a few boxes in this years 2019 Out Of The Woods which is a key part of the annual Western Australia Wood Show.

This one is called Man box – my wifes description due to what she suggested was a masculine banding around the out side. It was entered in the Box catagory. I started it as part of a demonstration on simple box making at last years WA wood show. It is made from veneered marine ply with solid cherry strips added for the bottom edge and cut-line of the lid before applying the veneer. Kiri is used for the inside and Cherry on the outside. The top is a book-matched pale burl jarrah veneer. The whole box is edgeing 3mm strips of rosewood.

The banding is a bought in one. The interior has two solid cherry trays linbed with goat suede.

This traditional style western box with hinged lid and lift out trays didn’t win any prizes….............. but see my other entries!

Thanks for looking.

Love how that burgundy suede plays off the color of the wood. It is pretty masculine.

Nice box.

I like the goat suede with the jarrah veneer. Brusso hardware?

Thanks Jim, No, definitly not Brusso. Its a quite cheap and cheerful box with chinese hardwear.

Now thats a good question Chuck! It could well be – I’ve had one piece for about 10 years. Its solid wood segments rather than laminated veneeer segments which seems to be the case with most of the bandings now avilable in Australia.
