Flag Stand, A Tribute to Gold Star Mothers

Shared loss in war can create unshakable, deeply personal bonds. Fourteen hundred miles separate my wife, Joyce Peck, Lincoln NE, and Janette Anderson, Chesapeake VA. And yet they could not be closer. Their sons died together in the deadliest helicopter crash in U.S. special operations history, Extortion 17. Joyce’s son, Army Staff Sgt. Patrick D. Hamburger, was the Ch-47D’s Flight Engineer. Jan’s son was a Navy Chief Special Warfare Operator (SEAL) Kevin A. Houston.

This is the second of two flag stands. Both are a tribute to the heroism and sacrifice of their sons. The stands are also a tribute to a relationship which has comforted and sustained two Gold Star mothers through the most grievous, shared loss. (Jan pictured left, Joyce right.)

Shop Notes: Colorado claro walnut. 8” W x 9” H. Constructed in 10 pieces. Multiple coats of O.B. Shine Juice per Captain Eddy. Very pleased with my first venture with a Simple Tool’s set of carbide lathe tools.

The stand is beautiful but not as beautiful as the purpose. Thank You

Beautiful work Mr. Peck, no doubt the beauty of the love that went to building the stand and the love and compassion shown to the recpeints far out shines them all. May your day be Blessed.

Beautiful work for a wonderful tribute … The gold star theme has been nearly lost over the years, how wonderful of you to help keep the tradition alive … My hat is off to you sir.

We all belong to our Gold Star family. Those who went in harm’s way and sacrificed all belong to all of us. We all share the loss. And, that’s the only difference from the losses in our own families and lives. For my wife and me, it has been an overwhelming and deeply humbling experience. We have been touched directly by the best, big heart of our nation. There is no adequate thank you for the sympathy and kindness given us.

DeLayne,

What a thoughtful tribute and such a special way to display our flag. Sometimes new friendships form from our personal trials that only someone who has experienced it can understand. I would never have thought of making a stand like yours but it is especially attractive and deserving of the honor of displaying our flag. And thank you for respecting our flag and not displaying it outdoors in inclement weather.

I have often watched or listened to (worldviewweekend.com) Billy and Karen Vaughn speak of the loss of their son Aaron. The story of Extortion 17 is heart-breaking, indeed, and we do hurt for all those who so needlessly lost their loves ones in that disaster. Thank you for reminding us once again of their selfless sacrifice.

I have no elegant words DeLayne but you know very well how I feel about the loss of your son!
