Hey Lumberjocks,
I decided to challenge myself by making a musical instrument, a Cajon, a box-drum. The drum is basically a box, 12” x 12” x 19” tall. The box-drum is 3/4” Walnut with Birch accents, all sides except the front. The “drum” or front face of the box drum is Mahogany. No plywood used in this project. I accented the Mahogany drum face with black oval-head screws. There is a 4” hole on the back panel allowing the air to escape at each drum slap. I also added an adjustable snare in the inside upper righthand corner. The “knobs ” on the sides allow the player to adjust the snare engagement or remove the snare from the inside surface altogether and play with just the drum face. Drumming on the different areas of the Cajon create beautiful and different tones.
Thanks for checking out the Cajon box-drum.

Very cool and interesting project. But I am still confused on how it works. DO you have pics of the inside? How it is adjustable?

So the snare adjustment is pretty straight forward. The knob on the right (as you’re sitting on the box) rotates the dowel which has a small snare (multiple wires attached to a small plate) that rotates and the snare then rests against the backside of the drum. The knob on the left simply locks the dowel in place – either the snare is engaged or disengaged.
