Last year I started this project, but got pulled away LOL.
Well I got back to it and finished a few of the letters.
These letters are based on the designs of Owen Jones (1809-1874) ‘One Thousand and One Initial Letters’ Dover Publications
I also launched my online store JaffaRoad at etsy.com. Please visit and see more pictures of the letters, Thanks.
This Fall I will also be opening the Chattanooga Carving CO-OP. A place for trading tools and carving classes.
Happy Summer,
Dan

What a great project Dan.
They are masterful executions of artful letters. Did these designs come from illuminated texts hand drawn by monks?
Are these power carvings or hand carvings? A little background and description of techniques would be “illuminating”.
>=D
Either way, GREAT JOB.

Thanks Jon,
The designs come from the book listed above. Owen Jones was a calligrapher back in 1800’s
He produced several works which are available from Dover publications,
I use standard machines to mill my stock and then cut them out with a scroll saw. Now using a new SEYCO
All the carving is done with chisels and gouges. I do not use any lasers, CNC machines or Dremel type tools.
I do use a router to establish the depth for the flat part of the letter and then carve the scrolling.
The Walnut letter A was not sanded. The other letters were sanded after carving.
I use shellac as a sealer and finish with my own beeswax/turp mixture
I will be teaching the whole process at my shop this Fall.

Wow! That would be cool to have an initial like that on the front door. I’ll check out the store later.

Dan,

Your lettering is outstanding! I have numerous calligraphy books from my years free-lancing. I have drawn the fancy initials with calligraphy pens but never thought of the possibility of carving them. I think you spent a few more hours making each one than I ever dreamed of spending with the pen! ;-)

Thanks for sharing your works of art!

“WOW!” Is right. “Beautiful” fits also.

Speaking of Chattanooga, My son just spent a couple days there sightseeing. He has been all over the world, flying in the Navy (retired) and now flying for FedEx. He was so impressed with Chattanooga. Said he thought it was one of the nicest cities he has been to and may have to retire there….

Dan,

We came back to admire your lettering again, but have a question: what is the last letter? We don’t want a marital argument, but then, maybe neither of us is correct. ;-)

Thanks for your interest. The last letter in the line up is an A. It is a different font from Owen’s book

I like carved letters (monograms). Yours are outstanding.
