My first dovetail cabinet

I was in need of a cabinet for my office, and was looking for a good challenge. I’d been practicing dovetails for awhile using offcuts and felt like I might be ready for the big show. This is my first cabinet (not made of plywood), my first inset door. Getting the reveal right (or close enough to fool most) was tricky, I feel using better quality hinges might make it easier to determine the appropriate spacing. Panel is finished in shellac, the cherry case was oxidized with a baking soda solution and finished with boiled linseed oil. I’ll be adding a shellac topcoat when the oil is nice and dry. If anyone is interested in seeing the build, I’ve got a video on my blog and loads of photos on instagram.

Thanks for looking!

That is a sweet cabinet Mike!
All the details and the choice of woods are great. The pull is very cool, I like the shaped form you’ve carved. Is the top also cherry? I like the contrast from the sides. How did you apply the shellac? Brush, pad or spray?
That is a very cool build.

Yes, case is entirely made of cherry. Case, rails and stiles all came from the same board. I used a brush to apply the shellac for the first coat, and evened it all out with a pad. Will be padding the topcoat of shellac on the cherry also, as soon as the BLO dries (so i might be never lol)

Congratulations on graduating to solid woods, and a DT case carcase.

Overall a very nice cabinet.

Thanks for posting.
