This box is a gift for a friend who is graduating, she plans to travel, hence the name Odyssey.
A combination of textures, spalting, colors, and design, are intended to evoke a feeling of our natural earth. The interior trays are connected by a bridge to hold earrings or such…. perhaps joining two shores?
Just my musings, and having fun.

The construction is a butt joint, with walnut pegs left proud. Simple, but tedious to ensure that everything stays aligned and square. I find it much easier to make miter cornered boxes, but I really like this style for its rustic look.

All of the following woods are local native Oregon species
Sides are Myrtlewood
Top is Madrone (Arbutas), spalted, with black epoxy
Front is Walnut with carving, back is also Walnut.
Jewelry trays are Big Leaf Maple, spalted

Imported woods
The red “Bridge”earring tray is Paduk, it is covered in suede pig skin.
Accent on front of lid edge is Bloodwood and Wenge
Three inlay stripes on front of sides are Bloodwood

The bottom is lined with Buffalo hide.

The finish is Deft semi-gloss spray lacquer.

The hinges are 1/8” brass pins.

Size: 11.5” long x 7.25” wide x 3” tall

Thanks for looking, and as always your comments are greatly appreciated!

way too many pieces of eye candy – I put on 3 pounds of saw dust and drooled all over my keyboard.

Nice, Nice, NICE

Beautiful…I think you captured the adventure that this young grad is about to embark on…surprises everywhere you look and the chance to explore new worlds. Excellent job!

So nice just as all of your work is! The box is packed with so much to see; a quick look is not definitely enough.

Andy, this has an unusual variety of wood treatments…even for you. I see splines, pins, stains, dimples, fills, and wild experiments on the inside. It seems emblematic of someone embarking on a journey of adventure into the unknown of what life can bring to a young person following her bliss. To her and to you I say, “Yo balsom”...may there be a way.
