A short while back I had a communication with robscastle and several on here was following because it was wide open to anybody that wanted to see.
Because of that conversation I told Rob I would send him one of my bowls as a swap for something he made. His response was that his work wasn’t the same quality as my bowls. Well, today I made it to the Post Office to pick up the swap item that he allowed me to select from his inventory and I have to say that I am duly impressed with my selection and his craftsmanship.
Pictured above is the small box that I chose and the way it appears to be made just knocked me off balance. It looks like a thick slab of wood (wish I knew the species) that was sliced to make a lid and what material that wasn’t wanted was cut away. TOTALLY different from what I do so it was refreshing to see this. As well the feet are part of the slab with stock cut away to identify the feet.
And the front hardware latch is just a perfect match for the character of the box

Thank You Rob, you made my day.

will you post the wood species for me and the rest that may be interested

That’s a really nice box! Forming it all out of a solid chunk is a nice touch and exceptionally well suited to that particular box and its grain. Good choice Dick and excellent work Rob!

Ken, That’s my thought exactly. When I look at a slab of wood, I see a slab of wood – Rob looked at it and saw a box and I’m glad he did.

Morning Dick,
That is without a doubt he best project that you never did.
I,ll leave Rob to shed more light on the species but I,m pretty sure that’s good old Australian gum tree of some discretion. Very very hard and difficult to work but beautiful.
( I believe Rob helping his son in Sydney lay some concrete block walls. Rob is apparently the brickies labourer and word has it his knees aren’t holding up great.) come in Rob, over.

Kind regards
Anthm

You’re right Mike, I’m lucky he wanted one of my bowls.

Good morning Anthony – I can hardly wait for Rob to get back to play so he’ll tell me about the wood

I just keep looking at this. Amazing work! From a single slab? Wow.
