Crescent moon cradle

This is the third cradle I’ve built in a year, but the first of this design. When my wife and I started planning the nursery for our son, due July 14, we decided on a moon and stars theme for the layout. The two prior cradles I built were of the pendulum style available from Wood magazine. It’s a beautiful cradle, and one my wife loves, but she saw this one on Pinterest and demanded that I build it.

To be fair, I’m kinda glad she wanted this design: Being painted, I could build it of very inexpensive wood, and since it’s of a “rustic” design, perfect mating surfaces and joints weren’t required. Cheap and easy AND pleasing to the “customer”—three things that often don’t go together.

Construction is 3/4” ply with dimensioned lumber. Paint for the upper is Rustoleum’s Titanium Silver. The base is painted with a dark blue acrylic paint from JoAnn Fabric. The mattress cover is fabric from the same; we both work at NASA, so I wanted it. It’s just tucked into place here; we’ll sew it up to make it tight this week. Mattress came from a vendor on Amazon; I had to get a custom size to fit.

The crochet blanket was hand made by a friend for the baby.

My wife is happy, I’m happy, and it’ll make a great toy box once he’s older.

That’s awesome! I’d sleep in that. I wonder if I can talk my wife into a king-size version ;-)
