Some fun with box elder-The Punisher

Early in the year I got a call from a local friend saying a tree fell over in a storm in his neighbors yard and he never saw anything like it. He described it and asked if I wanted some. What he described I knew at once was flaming box elder, I said YES! I asked if it was cut up yet and he said it’s cut into two foot sections. Sad, I wanted some logs but I made the trip and picked up a truck load. Now what to do with it. The answer came with Ken, HokieKen. He made the over two hour trip to my house in the mountains and despite the snow, cold and battling my cats, (6), cut it up into nice slabs to work with. He also came with an assortment of wood to trade and we did a lot of swapping. I must say it was an awesome day and I had a blast hanging out with him.

The Punisher is a comic character but his logo became very popular with many veterans of the Iraq war. Myself included. I kept a few pieces inside to dry and planed one down recently and had to try a “Punisher box”. To me, the flaming colors just set it off. Lots of lessons were learned on this one also. The box portion is pine and I had to cut multiple pieces to match the lid. Also route the back of the lid to fit the box. All new skills I have never tried. Thank heavens for the oscillating spindle sander! The eyes and attaching parts are walnut. Finish on the box is ebony stain coated with spray enamel. The lid was coated with danish oil, allowed to really soak in three times.

This was a fun project and will find a place on my table in July’s craft show.

P.S. I love building boxes!

That’s some pretty box elder. Hope the flames don’t fade too much as it ages.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I appreciate them! Dave DD-it would make a nice one! Dave P-it is really soaked in danish oil. I did a test piece and put it in the sun for a few days and had no change. Vicki-thanks, some wood just comes with a story. That’s what makes it special sometimes. Gary-it is some beautiful stuff! Toros-the colors really set it off. Tony C-thanks buddy. Lee-I found some in the batch that is figured, more (traditional) boxes coming. Tony-that’s twice ken and I have got together. Both times were awesome.

Very cool design and the wood is the perfect choice for it.

I have never seen anything like that wood! Amazing grain and color! I’ll have to see if I can find some over at Bell’s the next time I’m over in Marquette. It would be beautiful for pistol grips!!!
