My sister-in-law was just married and my wife suggested that I build them a gift that would be more personal than a monetary gift. I have seen a few wedding boxes posted before and thought it would be a great gift. I didn’t have a great deal of time before the wedding so I didn’t get too extravagant with the box or inlay also I really liked the wood and wanted it to speak for itself. It was a bit of a challenge to find two locks that were small enough for the box and would not have the same keys. I found the locks and hardware on eBay. I thought that the locks would be more symbolic than actually being used to keep someone out so high-end hardware was unnecessary. one lock is engraved with birds and flowers to signify good wishes and happiness, the other is engraved with the Chinese characters which translate to “Love for All Seasons”. We included a bottle of wine from a local winery and two handmade envelopes with handmade paper (not by me ) to be used to write each other letters and open on a future anniversary or special occasion. The base is made from Claro Walnut and the top from Maple Burl. The finish is sprayed shellac. I must say that it is really enjoyable to make something to give as a gift as it really does come from the heart.

Like the Chinese locks -there’s a good range of similar ones on Aliexpress.

Great choices, woods, design, locks, and even the wine.
Very nice and very thoughtful gift.

That is truly some amazing woods you used. That’s going to be an heirloom for generations. You knocked it out to the ballpark for sure!
