I had a dogwood on my property that died and I was able to get a section of trunk from it about 3 inches in diameter and 4 feet long. I may make a bowl once in a blue moon so I figured I would use the dogwood to see how it would look. It was easy to turn and did have a dark center of heartwood. Finished dimensions are 7.5” X 2.25” and finish is natural with just wax burnished to a gloss.

Looks good

-- "Fine Woodworking" is the name given to a project that takes 3 times longer than normal to finish because you used hand tools instead of power tools. ----Mike, Waukesha, WI

Never used dogwood, makes a neat-looking bowl.
