Sweet!!! Great looking mallet and love the choice of contrasting woods you’ve used.
Did you put anything like Johnson’s Paste Wax over the Formby’s Tung Oil finish? I’m making a mallet and some hand tools too and I’m wondering how to “finish” them.

Thanks MrWolfe! Usually I sand all the way up to 600 grit, which is probably overkill but I find it gives that silky smooth finish. After sanding to 600 it only takes a few coats of tung oil to finish it out. The finish has held up pretty well even with chisel use. If I’m worried about the wood being to soft for the application I use one coat of minwaxes wood repiar, sand then use tung oil.

On the thumbnail before I came inside the light handle is almost invisible. I was thinking, darn that is a thick cutting board. :-)

Nice Whammer. That pup being wedged, AND pinned isn’t going anywhere.

I always go to 320, I shake my head at those saying nothing happens after 220, or even 180. I think wood still feels plenty gritty at 180. For tools, and tool boxes I like Walnut Oil, seems like it feeds the wood, makes it nice to touch.

Thanks therealsteven. I completely agree about the sanding. 320 is my go to unless I’m going for that silky finish. Don’t think I’ve ever used any walnut oil. Any brand suggestions?
