Our house had a cheap spindle bannister when we bought it, and it wasn’t very solid. I replaced it with a custom built bookcase with walnut/cherry top. Used a set of slide in bolt-down brackets along the floor to give it extra strength. The brackets are securely fastened to the base of the bookcase, then attach to bolts anchored to the floor joists. This along with the fasteners along the back wall vertical surface hold the bookcase solidly in place. Top is walnut with a cherry splice. Back of the bookcase (facing the stairwell) will be board and battened along with the rest of the stairs to combine the bookcase into the existing wall.
