This is a fitting project for my 100th Lumberjocks post! This is a coffee table that was quickly claimed by some friends who I had promised a table to for years.
The story: a guy contacted me and said he was a metalworker hobbyist and he wanted to make more things and get his name out. I gave him a design I’ve wanted to try that really combined metal and wood. He went with it and welded it up and painted it black. Once it was done I loved it and decided that the combination needed spalted maple as the top because of the colors of the legs.
The slab had been sitting in my shop for about 2 years waiting for the right project. The wood had a crack and I decided to do a butterfly Dutchman, but I was really unhappy with the fit between the key and the hole. After an unsettled night trying to figure out how I was going to fix the hole I decided on some blue epoxy which I wound up loving – and so do they!
The leg wood was curly maple and finished with water based poly and the spalted Maple was finished with oil based poly.

Gorgeous top. Interesting conbinations/creativity with the legs. I like the mixture of wood and metal with the legs. I’m not 100% sold on the proportions, but I like the direction you are going.
