3 different wood duck boxes I built. I stuck my phone in yesterday and got a picture of wood duck hen on clutch.

Good on you for making the woodie boxes. I can’t believe she didn’t boogie out of there when you opened the lid. Are you a DU member? If so, good on you twice.

Dick, this is a pretty good summary about Woodies.

It’s not real clear there, just says “they” build a nest together. In the cases I have witnessed the Males stay on and doing nest duty. Very shortly after their coming out of the egg, little Woodies are lured by Mom to jump out of the tree hollow, or box they are born in, and are raised on the water. At that point Mom takes over, and Dad goes on with his life. Mom doesn’t really Mother them at this point, the young stay with her, but must quickly learn their lessons, or will be left behind.

The Males may chance on the same Female, but do not do the life mating like you see with Canada Geese.

I didn’t open lid. Just put my phone in opening – on video. I put 2 up at my dads pond. Both had eggs.

Good for you. I can only wish we could have Woody’s where I live. I’d love to built a dozen or so to help.

Getting that picture of the hen was awesome. So much fun. It’s all about providing habitat.

Very good boxes. I live along a river and DU has boxes up along the river. The boat around the river a couple times a year, cleaning and repairing them.

More than likely true. Wood ducks are dumping ducks, where multiple hens will lay in a single nest if given the opportunity. Also Hooded Mergansers dump in the same nest. There is a blog that has documented such events, and the hatching of Wood Ducks along with Mergansers.
