I got 3 requests for ‘baby boxes’ all about the same time! This one was request by our vet for one of their long time clients having a grandson. Doc gave me creative freedom as far as the woods go so this is what I did. I’d never used Quartersawn Sycamore before. I’m not a huge fan but it turned out pretty. The box measures 10×6x5. I didn’t have enough sycamore left over to plane down to make the mother and child and maple just didn’t look right with the box so I made her out of walnut. It’s not enough contrast but it worked out ok. The box and tray are lined with ivory canvas. The rattles are walnut and curly maple and toys are curly maple, finished with organic flax oil and beeswax. The box I used ‘seal-a-cell’, 2 coats and then several coats of semi-gloss wipe on poly.
I wasn’t there when the clients received their gift but those at the vets office told me they oooohhed and aawwwed over it all – which makes me smile!

Thanks for looking!

With this project now at #1, I’m think that more than one person here must like QS Sycamore! I know I do. But much more importantly, there’s a whole lot of fine work and love showing in that box.
