I have been wanting to make this for my friend Bill for a long long time. A Veteran of Vietnam as an Air Force medic, I wanted to honor him for his faithful service during a very trying and dangerous time.

However, sourcing the medallions was the long pole in this tent. These metal/brass/porcelain medallions and plaques are of superb quality, but are no longer made. So finding NOS items are extremely difficult. And finding an Air Force set was near impossible. A year after starting the search, one popped up in Alaska and I was able to complete the box.

The wood is curly black walnut, grain matched around the corners, even the removable tray. The tray and box are felt lined and the tray has a ring holder. Finished with tung oil and several coats of hard paste wax.

I will have the pleasure of presenting it to him day after tomorrow.

Could you explain/describe how you made the lid? Is it a solid piece edge banded or a veneered panel? Thank you

Hi techteacher. The top is a solid wood panel inlaid into the sides. The entire box is made from solid black walnut.

Very nice box build, and exceptional use of that grain. Very nice package.

Thanks for posting.

That is an amazing piece! The grain match is very evident and remarkable. Congrats on your DT3, your friend is going to be blown away.

Such a thoughtful and loving friend you are! Though it might just be a storage box, but the effort and thought that go behind the making of this gift are what truly matter at the end. I love the clean finish and the wood colour.
