A fun little project for my daughter. She is separating from the Navy and wanted a plaque to commemorate the event with a fun paddle plaque.

Mahogany for the face, walnut accent and oak for the handle. Wrapped in Navy blue colored para-cord. Tung oil with spray on lacquer finish. A little under 3 feet tall.

Custom cnc patterns.

Mel, thank you. Not sure with my wood selection at looking at the pictures. The mahogany is over powering the cnc patterns just because the grain is so pronounced and my opinion…gorgeous.

The previous mahogany board I used was a solid brown so didn’t even think to check the grain.

My daughter loved it so I guess it doesn’t matter.

Very cool and nice looking CNC work. How did you join the handle to the paddle?

I’ll bet doing the wrapping with Paracord took some time… But it came out great!

Tooch, unfortunately I did a terrible thing and used pocket screws to join the handle to the paddle. It should be hanging on a wall so shouldn’t be banged around a lot but definitely a weak point.

If I was ever going to do another one again I would probably use a dovetail or pinned mortise and tenon. I had a rough idea in my head so just started cutting. I really should start making plans again before I start cutting.

There is about 75 ft of para-cord on the wrap so it did take a bit. Only because I was winging it. I am not Navy so don’t know what the traditional wraps should look like.

A simple yet perfect idea to commemorate the event. The engravings would look even more stunning with a touch of colour.

From a 31 year Navy vet – to your daughter: Thank you for your service.
OG51 – Cool idea and project. Its the thought they say – but you did it in neat fashion.
