Each year, my daughter’s ballet school puts on a couple different performances. This spring it was Rapunzel and the set committee (it has one member) was asked to build an oxcart and a large rock for Rapunzel to fall asleep on.
The oxcart is made from simple lumber because it’s supposed to be used by a peasant. I used wood inserts to bolt together the sections of the cart so it can break down flat to travel back to the studio after the performance and it takes up less space that way. The inserts mean we won’t ruin the wood with continued use of screws in future shows too. The finish is a “burn on” with a propane torch
The rock is on a wood base (that I forgot to take photos of for some dumb reason) and I used newspaper to rough out the shape from there. The actual surface of the rock is plaster cloth and it was a really neat material to use. It’s the same stuff some of us had casts out of in our youth and is now mostly used for model train sets. It’s about 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep and 18 inches or so tall.
