After finally finishing my bed frame (6 years after starting) it was time to tackle the nightstands. I took inventory and had a few decent pieces left off oak veneer mdf I had left over from the drawer fronts of my vanity so those dictated the carcase size. I used poplar for the drawer boxes and paperbacked zebra wood veneer over mdf for the drawer face and shelf, to match the inserts on the bed frame.
I finished the oak with India ink, dewaxed shellac and multiple coats of water based poly. The zebra one got one coat of dewaxed shellac, one round of clear pore filler and water based poly.
They are pretty simple and serve their function. Thanks for looking.

I really like what you did incorporating the theme you started with on the bed. I like the contrast of the zebrawood against the dark stained oak. Using the stand-off for power/usb chargers, was an clever idea. Nice work all around!

very nice. I like the design and combination of woods. Nice touch to add the electrical outlets and USB ports.

I think more people should take advantage of veneer…

I agree! It’s something I think I’m going to incorporate more of into projects. For the little bit of solid zebra wood I would have used on these projects, it would have cost me about the same as the 4’x8’ sheet of veneer plus I have enough left over to redo my dresser with veneer fronts.

Nice contrast without being overbearing.

Is the frame made out of steel? Who made it? How much was it?

The bed frame is all steel with zebra wood inserts. I made it myself, it was around $300 in materials. The night stands also have a small piece of steel in the shelf support.
Have your say...
