Another Fly Fishing Landing Net

This was my second ever commission piece. A friend requested a fly fishing net as a Christmas gift for her husband. Given short notice, there was no way I would finish before Christmas, so we agreed to give him my personal net on Christmas day as a placeholder for the real thing several weeks later.

I started the laminating process and used polyurethane glue to bring it all together. The woods are: Blackjack Oak, Mesquite, Walnut and Ash. For this net, I also inlayed his initials into the head of the net. Am learning recently a couple things about these commission projects.

1) Pricing is somewhat of a challenge. I can find other, similar examples on the www for ballpark guidance. But coming up with a fair price that returns a decent hourly rate is tough. Which is also somewhat related to #2 …

2) Some parts of the build take a LOT of time, but ultimately add minimal value to the piece and sometimes can’t be seen at all (e.g. complex joinery). There’s obviously some skill and expertise involved, but I’ve decided to solve a portion of this problem with a few extra tools. I may not use them very often (e.g. mortising drill press) but when I do, that part goes much faster.

Anyway, I hope he liked it! As I recall he gave his wife a toaster … or something like that. She definitely out-gave him this year.

  • UPDATE *
I requested a picture of the net with a fish in it … which he sent several months later (and I uploaded).

Looks nice! I hope he will actually use it. I hate when they say it’s too pretty to use.
