Make a Mallet with 3 Tool

I’ve been trying to make things with an ultra-minimal toolkit recently. You might remember the little bench I did with just a saw, a hatchet, and a drill. Well, there were times during that build that I needed to hit the back of the hatchet (much like you would tap a chisel). I used the heel of my hand, but that hurt after a while. I used a hunk of scrap wood, but that was only slightly better. So I decided to make a mallet using the same three tools.

The head is green Siberian Elm (a great wood if you’ve never used it; a lot like oak but very dark). The handle is dry white oak. I joined them using a “blind wedge” where the top of the mortise drives the wedge into the split tenon. Worked great. Probably didn’t even need any glue.

This thing won’t win any beauty contests, but it’s solid as a rock, comfortable, and well-balanced. It’s a good tool and it cost me NOTHING. Even if you have all the toys, consider making something with just a few tools. It’s fun.
