Project Information

First project posted here! I'm relatively new to woodworking, I bought a home just over a year and a half ago, so finally had space to dive in head first. 90% of the finished basement has been converted into shop space :)

This was my first bigger piece of furniture, made from a bunch of pine planks that I found through Kijiji (Craigslist for Canada). The wood is very pretty, but I sure didn't know enough when I bought it to make any educated decisions, and it all warped pretty badly after getting it home and letting it settle.

Long story made short, I went apesh*t buying power tools when I set up shop, so much so that I never really spent much time getting to know any of them, let alone any of the hand tools that came before them. So for this project, I wanted to see how much of it I could reasonably do without using any of the power tools. It was a buttload of work, but it was also probably one of the most satisfying things I've done. I learned so much (and about how much more I still don't know!) and was just happy as a clam the entire time I worked on it.

The carving in the verts is used to hide imperfections in the surface of the wood, little dings that broke the surface and the like, and I am pleased with how it turned out. I wanted the shelf to have an organic feel, and in person, I feel like those little details help sell that.

All of the shelves are set in mortises, the thicker shelves have tenons, and the thinner strips just slot right in the mortises.

Stained the shelves a dark walnut to provide some contrast, and coated the whole thing with five coats of WipeOn Poly.

Glad to finally have something to share with the community, and would love to hear any criticisms!

I'll second Calmudgeon. You creatively met a functional need. My eye was caught most by the contouring you did to hide the edge imperfections. You took the edge from a distraction to a feature. Keep it up.
