My son is a competitive diver and needed a way to display all the medals he’s won. He’s been at it since he was 10, and he’s compiled a ton in the last 6 years. He’s now is a sophomore in high school and took 2nd in the State of Florida this year; he took 5th in State his freshman year and finished 26th in the country for 16-18 boys. I’m very proud of him, you can tell.

I scanned the web for design ideas for displaying medals and came up with this joinery. The back has a groove for the shelf to fit in, with half lap grooves for the sides joining the back. It’s all held together with through tenons from the shelf through the sides. As with all my projects, this was mad with only hand tools, no power tools involved, and no fasteners. The back has keyhole hangers mortised into each end that I made from brass door hinges. I copied Paul Sellers’ technique for making keyhole hangers from brass hinges. They turned out nice and work exceptionally well for mounting a heavy shelf on a wall. Of course, once I had them installed, I was so excited to hang the shelf that I neglected to take pictures of the back. So you’ll have to trust me on that.

The finish is a coat of Watco Danish oil that I sanded in with 400 grit wet/dry. Let that cure for about 5 days, then went over it with 3 coats of amber shellac. Finished up with a couple of coats of furniture wax. All said and done, it’s probably much nicer than it needed to be. He likes it and it looks good hanging on his wall. Thanks for looking.
