You Bought a Wine Rack?

That’s what I asked my daughter when she sent a picture of the wine rack that she bought! So I said “I could have made one for you”. Of course she said she didn’t feel right about that…

So I whipped this up. Nothing fancy. I bought some 1/4” poplar from Lowes. I didn’t want to spend a whole bunch of time milling so I bought some cheap stuff. Squared it up and ripped 36 pieces at 30 degrees to make hexagons. Used packing tape to clamp them together while the glue dried. Then came the time consuming part; sanding. Sanded each one to flatten the faces and then proceeded to glue them together. I had to do that in sections to be sure they all fit with no gaps. Then I had to hand plane the ends to get them all flat. I decided to drill some holes at the junctions of all the center joints and use some more of the those copper rivets. More sanding and sprayed it with 4 or 5 coats of satin lacquer.

So she’ll now have to return the other to store…
