Persimmon bowl

This bowl was made mostly from Persimmon wood, with accents of Hickory, Maple, Walnut , and Bloodwood. It is 11 inches in diameter, about 5 inches tall, the star in the bottom is Hickory heartwood, ( the dark), and sapwood, (the light) there are 208 separate pieces.

This is also the first project on my new lathe, a Laguna 18/36, I really like it, so quiet you have to make sure the wood is turning to know it is turned on. Even if the Wife did hurt her back helping me unbox it, I still like it. She is ok, (she is only 68),( I am 76) after that I finished putting it together by myself.

That’s absolutely gorgeous! Love the way you did the bottom.

Great work on the bowl! How long did it take you to complete the rough bowl? The contrasting pieces really stand out. Too bad your wife got hurt kinda diminishes your project. I bought a 18/36, but it hasn’t been delivered yet. The seller said they had 9 in stock, but somehow it was back ordered. I would cancel but I got in on the 10% sale and I really want the Laguna. Good luck with the new lathe and lets see pics of your furture projects.

thanks for the nice comments,
Dgreen, the wife is ok, but she did see a doctor and had to take some pain pills for a couple of days, she has already had a few projects made for her from my old lathe, and she will get a few more from this new one I’m sure.

Thanks Lew, appreciate the comment.

Mike02719, the bowl took about 3 weeks or so, the original feature ring was going to be a thunderbird but I did not like the way the bowl rounded up to meet it, so I changed the feature ring, the t-bird should be on the next one.
I think you will like the 18/36, I pondered between it and the Nova Galaxy 1644, but I finally decided on the Laguna because of the 18” capacity, now I need bigger Jumbo Jaws, mine are only good for 12”.

Quite the turning, actually quite the glue up. Well done, and it makes a sensational looking bowl.

Thanks for posting.
