Wooden Bookmarks

Daughter and granddaughter wanted wooden bookmarks. They both had seen a bookmark, made from wood in some mag and wanted one each made for them. The 6” model is slim and long to offer little resistance in my daughter’s bible. The 4” model is for the granddaughter and will go in cookbooks, blender books, etc…. As the second pic shows, strips were glued together starting with an oak center, a hardboard strip (similar to bakerlite), and white pine. In the pic it is difficult to see the 4” hardboard outside strips as the bookmark is on a hardboard table top. Sanding was the most difficult task as the bookmarks were a tad less than 1/8” thick and the various strips were not equal in thickness upon gluing. Had to insert my homemade zero clearance into the table saw to keep the saw from eating the strips. A total of four bookmarks were made. Time will tell if the slim gluing areas will be sufficient to keep the strips together during general use. Finish was three coats of spa urethane and five or six coats of minwax furniture wax. The appearance has a very soft visual affect. I did not want the bookmark to over shadow the book it was in. Now my brother-in-law, my sister, my wife and myself all want one.

Very nice, Don! I like the rounded tops. How did you shape them?

StephenBlann: I made a 10 in sanding wheel out of an old hammer drill. I cut the glued strips even both top and bottom and then very carefully used the sanding wheel to shape the top. I have not demonstrated how much twist these guys can take being so thin. Thanks for asking. (The sanding wheel is pictured in my home/workshop section.)
