Tea Box

Here is a tea box I finished up over the weekend. It’s made from African mahogany, with walnut splines, and walnut interior dividers. The braid carvings on all 4 lateral faces are carved, initially, with the Shaper Origin to establish overall shape, and then finished by hand, to get a three-dimensional look. The top is engraved with a tree of life design, and inlaid at the boundary with crushed abalone.

Thanks! I had this idea a couple weeks ago and decided to try to make it a reality. Made another before this that turned out alright, but I decided to change some things and take another stab at it. This is the result of that.

Wow – I love everything about it. Carvings are beautiful, give it a very rich look along with the stone inlay. Very creative.

Yeah, I spent some time studying the braid group in grad school, and ended up using a picture of one of the elements of the braid group as the logo for my Etsy shop. I’ve since taken it as inspiration for some other designs like this one. On this one, each of the braids is slightly different in crossing configuration, so the carvings on all four faces are unique.
