My wife wanted a bench for our foyer, so I grabbed some old pine barn wood I had sitting out in the shop and through this together.
When we discussed the idea of a bench, we originally wanted something white washed. Which is why I just did screws and plugs for the legs from the top. If I would have known how nice the wood was going to turn out, I would have used some hidden joinery. We just couldn’t bring ourselves to paint this one, the character of the wood is just too nice.

Nice looking bench Brian. I can’t quite see underneath, what are doing to prevent racking?

In short, I wasn’t really worried/concerned about racking. Between the 4 screws (2 1/2”) in each leg and the fact it’s really just for the kids to sit on once in awhile when they put on their boots but also more just for a visual space filler; I’m not really concerned on racking from too much weight being placed on it repeatedly.
