Walked out of the office last week and found two sections of an old barrister book case sitting by the dumpster. The one section was fully intact, the other was missing the pack panel and bottom. Surprisingly, the glass was not broken. The building across the alley is being renovated so I figured that’s where they came from. I went and talked to the contractor to see if I could take them, he said sure thing and told me if he found any more “prizes” he’d let me know.

Loaded them up, took them home and cleaned them up a bit. Found some really nice grain under the dirt and grime. There was also some faded markings on the back. Only one I could kind of make out looked like “1912”. Cleaned up the hardware and glass a bit as well and got to work on a new back and bottom.

I ripped down a piece of 5/8” plywood for the bottom. Aligned a dado at each end that aligned with the grooves in the bottom edge of the sides and slipped in some maple splines; bottom complete. Then just had to had a hardboard back.

A couple hours of TLC this weekend and I have a new CD and display cabinet in the garage. The only down side is I had to put it where you can’t see the ray flake on the side panels. Will have to remedy that during the next garage reorganization.
