Fireplace mantle (playing with black walnut)

So I always hated the mantle on the fireplace…

And after 9 months of not being able to work in my woodshop, construction finally was over. So I took on a project to break in my skills again.

The mantle was screwed into two piece of pine that were poorly affixed to the wall. Sad to say… I didn’t want to deal and I left them there (although the majority of the stability was from resting on the stonework / cement at the top).

I then put a pine support on the wall.

Resting on that is the piece of 1” black walnut for the top – I was measuring length. I had decided to build a box that would be open to the wall and slide over the support and screw in.

The box was made with 1” black walnut with 45 degree bevels hand planed to make mating surfaces.

This didn’t bode well for the box however… as after 7 years of little to no rain and essentially no winter… while I was putting this together over several days… it rained and got cold, and the wood moved.

Test fit with clamps looked okay though.

So I decided to use walnut dowels to help the glue up.

Once that was done I had to scribe the bottom to the stone (I had already scribed the top to the wall which curved a LOT).

After that just boiled linseed oil and paste wax.

I like it, very nice looking. I wish I could get that type of wood in my area.

Great mantle – I totally applaud you plane skills. The last time I tried a hand plane was in high school nearly 60 years ago and it didn’t go well.
back to the mantle – really nice and love the construction
