Segmented bowls

A few pictures of the 2nd and 3rd segmented bowls I’ve made. The woods are beech (pale body), African padauk (orangish accent), and African sapele (base and top trim).. The padauk really wanted to bleed into the beech, so I ended up using q-tips to put sanding sealer on the padauk before putting any other finishes on the piece. The last picture is one of the bowls on still on the lathe. You can see that the shapes aren’t quite identical, one is more angular. Life is funny – plans don’t always survive application of the bowl gauge.

The rounder one on the right also got its bottom blown out while shaping, and needed surgery to retrofit a new bottom on and have it blend in.

I also did one of just walnut and cherry, but it isn’t as visually interesting in a photo as these are.

That’s a neat pattern Gary, the Padauk was a good choice!
