Project Information

Hello fellows,at this time I would like to share my latest project. A router plane blade sharpening jig.

I just purchased a small Record Router Plane (#722) and a Stanley 71 ½ Router Plane.

I already have a homemade model:

I don't like to sharp at free hand way so I always prefer a sharpening jig.I checked at web about the idea of router planes blades jig but didn't find anyone I liked.

So I decided to develop myself idea for small and big router plane blades.

The idea is simple:using a round bar to hold the blade and find the correct angle at sharpening stone surface. It works for bevel and sole.

See the pictures below.

The project started here. The blade can go up and down and turn in any degree in both directions:

Because I don't have a table saw I cut by hand and add precision at router table.

Round brass bar for small router blade .The screw on center hold the blade in position.I lost the file with this part of project. But it is simple to do at home using a 3/4" brass bar.To make the holes insert the bar at a piece of wood to add support for drill bit (as sharp as possible).

Round wood bar for diamond shape router plane blade.I used a 90° V shape bit.

I add a round brass bar and tapered 4 mm hole

Remember to support bearings at holes

I did a round wood bar for hexagon shape blade for my homemade router plane.

Locking screw

Thanks for attention.

A very interesting idea. I'm going to have study this further. I too, to do not like to sharpen free hand, probably because I'm not good at it. This jig idea just might be the answer.

Thanks for your comment. The idea came so quickly when I was thinking in how to do the jig and I was inclinated the blade many times. The first idea was use a door hinge and after I changed for a round bars.
