Project Information

Hi all!! I built this tack trunk for my daughter for Christmas. Some trial and error(mainly the finishing work)but was able to be very happy with the end result. The case was made with Baltic birch plywood. The top is 3/4 inch which enables her to sit on it and the sides are 1/2 inch to reduce the weight.
All the face frames and drawers are made from black birch skidded from my woods and sawn by a portable band saw mill. Drawers are jointed with dovetails I made with a router and the handle was an idea from a previous mistake.
I originally finished the trunk with dewaxed shellac with some fresco colors dye. Test boards proved it to be very nice although I ran out of finish and had to make another batch. The new batch did not match the last so I ended up removing the entire finish and wound up putting a gel stain on it instead. The top coat is sprayed spar urethane due to being put in a barn.
The hardware is antique brass with an exception of the hidge
You can tell by my daughters smile that she really loved the gift. The best part is… it's a gift from the heart that will last a lifetime.

Good looking, solid tack trunk. Plenty of storage space. I especially like what you did with the compartment in the lid and the cork board. The removable trays will also be very useful.
