A Blue Ribbon Case

My son has a new garage at his house and I’d been trying to think of a good “garage-warming” gift to make him. So Christmas rolled around and my buddy Fridge had this PBR sign (which happens to be his LJ avatar) he wanted to unload. Brandon’s garage is also his “man cave” and has a section with a pool table and I figured this sign would fit nicely there.

I wanted to add a little of my own touch to the sign before gifting it. It was a little delicate as-is (as seen in the last 2 pics) and I was afraid it would get cracked or broken if he hung it like it was. So, I decided to use some White Oak and make a new case for it.

I opted to use box-joints for the corners and when cutting my test joints using my Incra Ibox jig, decided I like the look of the proud fingers so I did the box like that. I rabbeted in a 1/2 plywood back and mounted the sign to that. Then to protect the the face from who-knows-what his kids may throw at it, I put a sheet of plexiglas on the front to protect it.

Brandon liked it a lot so it was worth the effort to give this old piece of Americana a little bit of a facelift. Much thanks to Fridge for the sign :-)) Comments and questions welcome as always. Thanks for checking it out!

I like how you left the box joints proud. Definitely a big plus and the thing looks great. Having seen a couple pics of his shop in progress, it’ll fit right in.

I normally don’t like proud box-joints, but in this case the look darned good. Nice work, Kenny!

Looks good with White Oak but shouldn’t you have framed it in Alder (or maybe Red Oak) in honor of Fridge?
