I know that there have been plenty of these made by other Lumberjocks, so I’m adding myself to the list. Maybe making one of these is some sort of “rite of passage” or something. Well, I can finally check this off my list. My wife asked me to make her one of these a few years ago. I was wondering if she had forgotten about her request it was so long ago. I’ve had the plans with templates for about a year. And the lumber (Alder) has been in my shop for about the same amount of time. So I decided to make one — and gave it to her about a week ago as a Christmas present . She was very happy to get it and it wasn’t long before she put it on the mantle (which I also built) in our living room. She later told me she thought I had forgotten about her request. I assured her that I never forget anything she asks me to do, some things just take a while. (Wink, wink.) I finished this with a coat of BLO and followed that by rubbing in mixture of beeswax and mineral oil.

Where did you get the plans for it? I would love to make one for my grand kids.

Hi Steve,

Sorry I didn’t include this before, but I got the plans from Wood Magazine’s website called Woodstore. Here’s the link:

Love the color of the Alder!

I too have had plans for this on the bench for a while….getting ready to make it for my grandson’s birthday. Woodsmith made their prototype with pine, but your version in alder is far superior. Nice choice and nice finish, too.
