1/2” Forstner Bit, Table Saw, Palm Sander, Drill press, Varathane 3X Polyurethane, Red Felt, Spray Adhesive.

.) I ripped piece from a 2×4 to the width of a box of matches & 6” long.

.) I traced out the thickness & width of the box of matches on the side of my piece of wood.

.) Once this was done it was time to start cutting out the notch/slot for the box of matches to fit into.

.) To cut this notch out I turned the piece of wood on its end & raised my table saw blade up to the height of the traced out pattern and using my table saw fence to help me keep things straight while I hogged the notch out. In doing it this way it helped me creep up on the proper size to make sure the box of matches would fit snugly in the notch.

.) Once the notch was hogged out, it was time go drill out the holes for the candles to sit in.

.) I placed the block in my drill press vise to hold it securely while I drill the 1 1/2” “pockets” out. Only drilling deep enough to hold the Tea Light candles in place & leaving enough of the candles exposed to easily replace them when they are no longer usable.

.) Now, it was time to put a finish on it. I used (so far, my favorite finish) Varathane 3X polyurethane spray for the finish.

.) Once the candle holder’s finished drying, I cut out 3 1 1/2” pieces of red felt to line the candle holes, rather than having just a plain hole showing & to “dress it up” a little bit & make it more “presentable”. I sprayed each of the 3 felt liners with the contact adhesive & then placed them in each hole, covering the drilled out holes up as I said before.
