Hawaiian Koa Box For the past several years, my wife and I have made it to Kauai for our anniversary. Sometimes, I manage to take advantage of that and bring back a little Koa wood in my suitcase. This box features a book matched lid panel and a carved Polynesian fish hook. the box is about 5.5×8.5 inches, with rabbeted corners, dadoed top and bottom panels and brass 95 degree stop brass hinges. The bottom is lined with gold suede leather, and the whole box is finished with Minwax semigloss poly.

Sharp looking box. That wood has amazing figure, is it hard to work with? Also can you tell me where you got your hinges?

awsum55- Hinges came from Rockler. Koa is not hard to work with, except the more cross-grain highlights there are, the less likely you can put it through your planer without tear-out. It saws and sands about the same as cherry. The other downside is the cost…....the real premium curly koa can be $50+ per board foot.

Nice Box Love the Koa
I’ve brought back Koa from Maui in the past and am looking for ideas of how to use it
BTW my mother’s name is Wenonah.. she was from Iowa but fathers family is pure Minnasotan.

My SIL sent me a USPS flat rate box crammed full of cutoffs from a shop on Kauai a while back. Most are too small to do much with but your box gives me some ideas with resawing thin veneers. Cool box JB!

That’s a real beauty John – that Koa is amazing and the fish hook tops it off perfectly…....
