Picture frames for a bachelor

Whipped up these frames in a couple days as a gift for my brother-in-law. He was going through a bit of a rough time and lives in an empty apartment so I thought these frames would help him make the place more like home. I made 3 of them out of one board of walnut and printed the pictures myself at home – 3 sets he could rotate or pick from to display based on his most nostalgic games.

I tried to make the frames a bit more masculine in nature with simple half-lap joinery and chamfered edges. I felt the walnut was “handsome” as they say, and purposely picked a board with some sap wood to give them some visual appeal against the simple construction. I used 0.093” acrylic sheet for the “glass” and cheap hardboard as a backer, then added the clips and hanging claws. Finished with 3 coats of Arm-R-Seal.

These are the first frames I’ve ever made and I’m pretty happy with how they turned out. The most defining point of this project was when I cut the pieces to size and glued up the joinery in about 45 minutes – “this is easy,” I thought, “I’m almost done!” And then it took another several hours of router trimming, rabbeting the back, all the grits of sanding, finishing, cutting the glass and backer, and installing hardware. I was probably 20% done at that point, LOL. Such is every project it seems.

C&C welcome.
