Euchre box

I designed this custom box to hold a deck of Euchre cards and keep score. The top and bottom are maple and the hinges are walnut. I initially tried to shape the ends using a bullnose router bit, but ended up just using a belt sander and some trial and error. A couple of 1/4” oak dowels operate the double hinge, which allows the box to close forward or backward, as well as lie open as shown in the different pictures. The box is held closed by four refrigerator magnets that are inset in holes made on the drill press and covered with walnut plugs that are about 1/8” thick. They are strong enough to hold the box closed even when lifted by the lid. The scoring pins are a couple of wooden golf tees. As this is a Christmas gift for a friend who loves the University of Michigan, I tried my hand at routing/chiseling an inlay for the “M”. That is made of Purple Heart. I thought about fully inlaying it, but was worried that sanding the surface flush would ruin the deep color (the underside was very dull after planing). The recess for the cards was made using a custom router template and guide bushing that I cut out with my jig saw by tracing the deck of cards slightly oversized and using a Forster bit to make the finger grips. It’s all finished with paste wax for a natural look. All told, I think I used just about every tool in my shop for this… so I’d call that a win! ;-)

My son has issues with the logo. He thinks Ohio State would make it look better.

Nobody plays Euchre here in MD, at least that I have found. I miss it so much I tried to teach my in-laws. Didn’t work out well.

Not familiar with the game but love the box design.
Could be quite useful for many applications with that flip top thinking phone holders?
