Now that my wife isn’t looking over my shoulder, I can post my actual first attempt at a cutting board that will be given to her for Christmas. I had read the description of how to make an end grain cutting board in Wood Magazine and looked at a few of the boards here. I played around on Google Sketch up until I came up with a pattern that I thought I could do and looked neat. It turns out that I am not as original as I thought (shocker!) Looking at other boards on the site, I now see that this pattern is called a tight weave and is pretty common. Each square is 2 inches and the board is an 1 1/4 thick. Wood is walnut and hard rock maple. I had some issues with it bowing after it came out of the clamps, but was able to sand it flat again. finished with mineral oil. I’m pretty pleasesed with both boards.

I’m pretty sure that the highlight through the maple is due to the glue not allowing equal penetration into the wood, but that would be a guess. I like it too.

Dude! First or tenth, that was a great job. I suggest you stop now while you’re ahead.

Oh yeah, Great!!! (Dripping with sarcasm)... ‘cause my wife happens to catch a glimpse and wonders why she ain’t getting something like this for Christmas. And since this was your first board I can’t even use the excuse of ‘not knowing how’. You guys are causing me grief. At least somebody’s wife will be happy this year. <grin> Nice, enviable first effort!

Beautiful board, especially for a first attempt. Great choice of wood.
Now I have to make one :-)
Did you create a blog, or would you part with the sketchup file?
Thanks for posting
