I am leaving the frilly knobs to my wife, otherwise, this is finished!

Thank you, Brett, for sending the plans for your Walnut/Maple Desk

This was a fun project and my daughter should get a lot of use out of it. I scaled the desk down a little to make sure it would be friendly to a college apartment in the near future. Hard Maple and Purpleheart were heavier and harder than the project required, but it should be very durable.

I opted for a rabbit on the drawer boxes instead of dovetails because I want to make custom dovetails and opted not to use the PC jig. I will probably sell my jig and buy a good saw and chisels instead.

Finished with General Finishes High Performance. It was easy to apply, smooth and seems to be rock hard. I am very happy with it.

I left the top and drawers in the sun for about 10-12 hours and they purpled up nicely after sanding. Even in the shop, it was obvious they darkened. The GF HP finish exaggerated the color as well. The picture of the drawer close up is accurate to the real color. There is no mistaking the desk is purple.

Very nice job Brian! It’s surreal to see the desk I made plans for come to life by someone else. Looks like she’ll have a great looking desk that will last a lifetime!

Thanks again Brett! My son just asked me to make one for him with a Walnut top. The only thing that would make me more proud of his is if he’d asked for Alder. Oh well.

Love this selection of contrasting woods. She should be flowing this down to her daughter if Desks are still in use by that time…

Excellent modern lines! Being as hard as that wood is, that desk will be around for generations to enjoy.

Wow, that is a gorgeous desk. I have building a desk for my daughter on my long “projects to-do” list—may have to take some notes here…

You know daughter is going to puff up and tell everyone “My dad made this”. i made a coffee table and two end tables for my grand daughter. All three are still on display in their new $300K house. It is a source of pride for me. I hope this becomes a source of pride for you dad.

The table looks great. I really like the color combination. I would have the same table in my apartment, I think it would look very good. I remember how uncomfortable I was to write an essay buy custom essays uk on our old table my back constantly hurt.

Beautiful project Brian! Did you have any chipping of the Purple Heart when you were working on the edges or corners? Does the sun bring oil out of the board that makes it more purple?

Thanks, everyone for the comments. I like knowing that the desk will last a lifetime or two.

John – I think there was one very small chip prior to the glue up. You want to make sure you do not slice the boards with each other because the wood is so hard and sharp. It was either too small to notice or it ended up on the bottom anyway. The purple heart was actually nice to work with. It was predictable, did not want to move, solid as can be expected, and finished easily. I would use it again.
