As my first relief carving I decided to make a picture of my girl friend’s pet dachshund. We had just met in the summer, and I was planning this as a Christmas gift. I had a piece of mahogany about 10” square. Using a generic photo of a dachshund as a guide, I dug in with my palm tools and pocket knife. To emphasize the relief I made the frame as part of the carving. To simulate the texture of the bushes I made shallow gouge cuts with a narrow palm gouge and allowed the bushes to overlap the frame. Some of my other techniques were less creative.

That was seventy years ago, when I was sixteen. I married that girl several years later. The carving is now on loan to my youngest grand-daughter.
